Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass looks, well, kick-ass. It’s a great concept, some ordinary people figure they don’t need super powers to be super heroes. Some of them have great fighting skills and some are just good at surviving a beating.

I suspect part of the appeal, frankly, is seeing a little girl swearing like a trooper and then kicking the crap out of a bunch of bad guys. Seeing Kick-Ass (a super hero) getting beating up and dishing it out is quite exciting too.

It’s nice to see a super hero movie that isn’t some crappy attempt at psychoanalysis or heroes striving to do the right thing and just getting down to people beating the crap out of bad guys.

Tron Legacy

I’ve heard rumours that a new Tron movie was on the cards for some time and I was very dubious, I didn’t think it could live up to the original, which is cheesy, but a classic. Having seen the test footage/clip I’d go see Tron Legacy.

A movie about a bunch of fans breaking into Skywalker ranch (home of George Lucas) to steal some Star Wars stuff. Sounds lame, looks very funny with plenty of in-jokes.

Push

Push looks like a bit of a mix between Heroes and Jumper, hopefully with a bit more depth than Jumper and bit less than Heroes. Dakota Fanning looks to be scene stealing it from her taller co-stars.

Taken

Each of the trailers for Taken looks better than the last, without revealing much more. The benefit of having Neeson play the key role is his quiet demeanour, you believe the words his says, you believe he will find and kill whoever took his daughter, that he’s an unstoppable force of nature, and we all like bad people getting what’s owed.

Race to Witch Mountain

I have fond memories of Escape to Witch Mountain from when I was a kid, we named one of our cats Tia. The original had Tony and Tia Malone, two orphans with unusual powers. Tony, with the help of a harmonica, has a telekinetic ability and Tia can communicate with animals and can sometimes see or ‘feel’ future events.

So I was quite intrigued by Race to Witch Mountain, a new movie by Disney starring Dwayne Johnson (formerly The Rock) amongst others. It looks like they have upped the children’s powers, their technology, they’ve introduced an alien bounty hunter to chase them and taken away much of the charm.

In the original they were trying to get back to Witch Mountain as that’s where their kin were based and they hoped to meet up with others like them, in the new movies it’s where they crashed their space ship.

Slumdog Millionaire

The idea of someone coming from a slum and being able to win the top prize, then getting accused of cheating sounds interesting enough, but the link to destiny and how events (presumably shown by flashback) in his life have given him the answers, plus his search for his true love, sound like a great combination.

From the trailer and description I’m not sure if Michael Rapaport’s character actually develops super-powers or if he just gets convinced he has them. Either way it looks a very interesting, and surreal, story of a man going from zero to (sort of) hero.

Iron Man

Previous experience with superhero movies has meant I generally hold little hope for them, but the Iron Man trailers I have seen so far all suggest something a bit different, something that actually looks good.

Not sure if this is because the story looks more interesting than most, perhaps because it seems less exaggerated than most superhero films. Robert Downey Jr seems to have brought some playfulness and dry humour to the role, which is good. Gwyneth Paltrow is playing far from a typical love interest/damsel in distress. So far, looks good.

Iron Man is due for release in the UK on 2nd May.
