As you’d expected at the start of a new year, there have been a rash of reviews of upcoming films to get you excited about cinema in 2011.
The BBC has a rundown of 20 high-profile films released this year, for example, io9 lists 55 sci-fi and fantasy films they’re eager to see.
Certainly there’s a lot of interesting stuff coming out, though we’ll have to see how it goes. Paul Harris sums the year up as Hollywood taking a safe bet though, with a lot of sequels, remakes and adaptations.
Even I did a list last year, so how did I do?
- Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the Lightning Thief – I was right, not a great film and I’ll be surprised if it makes another outing. It managed to more than earn back its budget though.
- The Wolfman – Apparently not ‘too much talent in it to fail.’ It was a financial failure by the looks of it.
- Takers – Didn’t cause much of a stir, though it made its money back.
- Alice in Wonderland – Did very well despite the rush move to make it 3D.
- Green Zone – I think I was right to wait and see, didn’t make its money back.
- Clash of the Titans – The hash 3D job wasn’t enough to stop it making some money. Looks like there might be another one in the works (how?).
- How to Train Your Dragon – Did well all round by the looks of it, but took an age to get to DVD.
- Wall Street 2 – I think I was bang on.
- Iron Man 2 – And it was a big hit.
- Letters to Juliet – Moneywise, I was on it, though it wasn’t as big a hit as I expected.
- Robin Hood – Yep, was a banker.
- Shrek Forever After – Storming numbers.
- Prince of Persia – Got hammered by the critics and didn’t make big money, but not a bad film.
- Sex and the City 2 – Did well, but not as well as the first and I think most people thought this one went too far.
- The A-Team – Not as big a hit as I thought. I’d be surprised if there is no sequel though.
- The Karate Kid – Storming box office, and not supposed to be that bad either.
- Toy Story 3 – Minted.
- The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – And it made more money than most of the other films released, ever.
- The Last Airbender – Way off the mark, was crap, sank like a stone.
- Predators – Banished AVP to a bad memory and was a modest hit.
- The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Modest hit, but not well received.
- Little Fockers – Still on release and earning solid numbers.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 – WB were laughing all the way to the bank, what to do after the last one is released?
- The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader – Again, didn’t do too bad, more than made its money back.
- Tron Legacy – Not massively well received, but I liked it and it posted solid numbers.
- The Green Hornet – Isn’t released yet.
So all in all I did pretty well, apart from The Wolfman and The Last Airbender I was pretty well on the money. Shame I can’t trade shares in movies, I’d be a pretty good broker.
