The BBC discusses some of the technologies and services being considered to replace disc formats.
I quite like some of the ideas:
DECE is working on an ecosystem that will allow users who buy digital content to view it on any of their devices such as mobile phones and portable players.
“If I’m travelling and I’m in a hotel that is a DECE member, I’ll be able to access my entire library through the hotel’s pay-per-view interface and stream movies right to my room,” said Mitch Singer, DECE president.
There’s also talk of cloud-based systems (that’s computer cloud, i.e. internet, not meteorological).
It’s interesting to here that Blu-ray makers don’t think things like streaming services are competitors. I’ve noticed in a couple of Blu-ray’s I bought recently they’re offering free DVD and download copies, presumably to stop people ripping them and to allow more flexibility in playback. Good thinking and a refreshing change from the usual desire to lock it all down and make us buy multiple copies.
