The Hobbit Returns

It’s all over the web, Peter Jackson and New Line have buried their differences and teamed up to make two films based on The Hobbit, a prequel to Lord of the Rings written by J.R.R. Tolkein. The films will consist of The Hobbit and a sequel (to be written I assume, as I don’t believe Tolkien ever wrote one, maybe they’ll base it on suggestions mentioned in). Jackson will not direct the films, but act as executive producer. The director has not yet been named. Don’t hold your breath though, sounds like it’ll be a two and a half year wait for the first film:

The two “Hobbit” films – “The Hobbit” and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.
