I remember reading with some incredulity that they were going to build a film studio in Cornwall, my thought was it was too far away from London, the UK’s main film base, too much of a backwater, it’d never work.
Well, it turns out it was all a bit of a con anyway. The man behind the supposed £6 million project actually didn’t have any investors, he just managed to con the better part of £2 million in the form of a grant from the European Union’s Objective One funding for disadvantaged regions. It’s not the only project financed under the initiative to have gone belly-up either.
The site did have one moment on infamy though, it was where the car from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was stolen. On the plus side, another company has taken over the half-finished site and plans to complete the studio and start a Cornish Film Academy. Mind you, as we’ve already seen, don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched.
