Digital Inspiration has a quick guide on how to do stop-motion animation using a digital still camera and Windows Movie Maker. Stop-motion is a fairly simple, if somewhat time-demanding process. To get an idea of the power it can be used for remember that all of the Wallace and Gromit films were shop stop-motion. The new Shaun the Sheep series is all stop-motion and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride was shot using stop-motion too.
A friend of mine, who did an arts degree, actually animated a few scenes from Roald Dahl’s The Twits back in the day using a video camera, a Mac with digital capture and some sets and characters he build himself. I can tell you that I still remember how blown away I was when I saw it put out to a TV screen. Now it’s even easier, with higher quality cameras available cheaply and free software.
