I like Kevin Costner as an actor (I’ve never met him), he seems to get a hard time from the critics, but he’s played some superb roles in great movies. I’m probably one of the few who like Waterworld, although even I can’t support The Postman. Since those high-budget flops he seems to be intent on picking interesting projects with great characters, like Tin Cup, Thirteen Days, Open Range and Rumor Has It. Mr Brooks looks to be another interesting role for Costner, a chance to show his darker side.
Earl Brooks (played by Costner) is a loving family man and a local business icon. But Mr Brooks is deeply flawed and very aware of it, he is addicted to killing. Struggling with his pathology, he tries to quit, but his alter-ego, Marshall (played by William Hurt), has an altogether different idea. Marshall enjoys his existence and his ‘work’.
