HD-DVD and Blu-ray Encryption Blown Open

After earlier reports that various parts of the encryption on HD-DVD and Blu-ray high definition DVDs had been cracked it now appears hackers have managed to determine the ‘volume keys’ that would unlock access to every single disc released, or likely to be released. So, that’s all of the encoding blown wide open and it means anyone could rip any high definition disc currently on sale.

The next question then, is how will the studios respond? Will they beef up security, or change the way it works? What happens to all those people who have bought players? Will they need new chips or firmware, will the manufacturing process be changed, and if so, will new discs be backwards compatible? Not to mention, if they do release a new style of encryption, how long before that’s broken?
