Indiana Jones to Return

George Lucas has confirmed shooting on the next Indiana Jones film, the fourth in the series, will begin in 2007 with the film due for release sometime in 2008. Lucas stated that he and Steven Spielberg, the director of the three previous episodes, had recently finalised the script. Harrison Ford, who has played the adventuring archaeologist in each of the previous outings, has confirmed he is fit and ready to play the part, despite being 64, and confirms he will still be able to bring the same level of stunts and ‘physical action’ that fans have come to expect. There are also rumours Sean Connery may return as Jones’ father, although Connery says he has not yet been approached.

The script has been in development with 10 years, and been on hold a number of times due to commitments by the main players. Lucas said the film would be:

…”a character piece” including some “very interesting mysteries”.

I’m a big fan of the series, but I’m surprised Ford is still to take the main role, I’m not sure someone nearly as old as my grandad is what I want to see on screen as an action hero. Either you leave the series be, or maybe you groom it for a younger character, maybe have Jones move into more of an Obi-Wan role of teacher and guide. Not that I won’t go and see it, even if it’s just for nostalgia, which means it’s a guaranteed hit really.
