The Guardian published a list of, in their opinion, the world’s 40 best film directors (back in 2003) (I’m guessing living ones but it doesn’t state that). Anyway, I’d like to take issue with their list, I’ve re-published the list, sans comments, below for easier reference. Obviously I can look at this with hindsight, but where the hell are: Jim Jarmusch, Ridley Scott, Peter Weir, Michael Mann, M. Night Shyamalan, Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan and Clint Eastwood? As this is supposed to be an ‘art’ list, Spielberg’s absence I guess can be excused, but personally I think he should be included regardless.
As for the list itself, Lynch, number one, I think not, how hard is it to make incoherent drivel and then let people read whatever they like into it? The Coen’s, as much as I like them, should be lower, and as for Malick, he’s made three films, definitely drop him down the list. Soderburgh too needs to be much lower. PTA’s inclusion, I’m guessing, is because he was hot at the time, but has since done nothing, for so long in fact you could almost remove him entirely. Likewise for David O. Russell. What the heck are the Wachowski’s doing on the list? As much as I like the Matrix movies, they’re hardly art. Most of the success was built on a technique which had already been used in bullet time. Fincher should be higher.
Anyone else you think should be included?
