I’m not entirely sure what the idea is, but Blockbuster and the Weinstein Company have announced plans for an exclusive rental deal in the US.
According to the deal, Blockbuster will have exclusive rental rights over Weinstein Co. theatrical releases and direct-to-video films beginning on Jan. 1. The two companies will share rental revenues for Weinstein Co. titles.
The privately held Weinstein Co. will also be paid a minimum guarantee by Blockbuster for its movies, based on box office performance for theatrical releases and on acquisition or production costs for of direct-to-video movies.
Blockbuster will provide a dedicated store and Internet display for Weinstein Co. titles.
It seems a strange thing to do, limiting the rental audience, the worrying thing is it could start a trend which would mean you would have to go to different places depending on what film you wished to rent, which would become very tiring.
