Bond Triumphant

It seems Daniel Craig has come through his first round with the critics unscathed, and with a massive boost to his confidence, they loved him. Craig has been under fire from some Bond fans who were unhappy with his appointment, and there were concerns over the new approach film-makers were taking, looking to make the films more gritty and human rather than the super-slick productions of late. Early reviews have shown that while the fans may not be happy, the critics certainly are.

The Daily Mirror said he was seen “oozing the kind of edgy menace that recalls Sean Connery at his best”.

“It’s Bond, but not as we’ve known it,” according to the Telegraph.

“The guns and action are there… the girls are certainly there… but the clonking double entendres of the old days are gone – in their place is a much more teasing, smartly written prospect.”

I have to say that I was getting slowly fed-up of the format of the recent films, they haven’t made a cracking Bond film since the early eighties and it was rapidly descending into a series of stereotypes that looked like the film-makers had used a checklist: exotic locations, check; beautiful women, check; femme fatal with a suggestive name, check; villain with physical or mental problem, check; tons of gadgets, check; casino scene, check; DB5, check; tuxedo, check; flashy car, check. That’s it folks, we have a bond film.

I was looking forward to them trying to get back to somewhere near reality, something more Bourne Identity than the original Casino Royale. The good news is, if the hype is to be believed about how good the new film is, Craig has already signed on for a second film.

On the Bond theme, the new theme song (see what I did there?) will be written and recorded by Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, who was previously the singer of rock group Soundgarden, and will go under the title You Know My Name. The recent themes have been disappointing, Goldeneye and Die Another Day were okay, but I don’t think they’ll be played over and over like the originals (as I listen to this a re-mix of the Diamonds are Forever theme by Shirley Bassey is playing on the radio).
