The Future of Lucasfilm

I’m not entirely sure what George Lucas is thinking, maybe he’s hit his head, or there’s something funny in the water at Skywalker Ranch, because he’s announced Lucasfilm are to get out of making feature films (not that they’ve made many for anyone other than Lucas) and into TV.

Lucas told Variety that they were getting out of films and into TV because films were too expensive and too risky and that, in the end, he felt it was quantity that was important. Has he not heard the phrase “it’s quality not quantity?”

Perhaps the biggest news were the announcements of some of the forthcoming projects. Indiana Jones 4 has long been rumoured, Jurassic Park 4 was also mentioned. Lucas also discussed a feature called Red Tails about the Tuskegee airmen who fought in World War II and a future live-action Star Wars TV series.

Last but not least was talk of Lucas Animation, which is currently making TV programmes, but will soon move into the already crowded feature film market.

The line Lucas calls himself “semi-retired” but reiterated his plans to direct, “small movies, esoteric in nature,” after his other projects are launched, is somewhat interesting. He’s mentioned he thinks of himself as an artistic film-maker rather than a mainstream film-maker (yeah, right) and would like to go back them before, probably after he’s tried to wring every dime he can out of Star Wars.
