In a series of announcements about future projects, MGM Chairman/CEO Harry Sloan mentioned a return to ‘tentpole’ movies in the $150-200 million range. MGM were recently acquired by Sony Pictures.
Variety announced some of the movies which MGM may be preparing, which included a fourth Terminator film, a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair and a second instalment of Steve Martin’s take on the Pink Panther.
A joint production with New Line Cinemas of The Hobbit was also mentioned. It has been mentioned before, with Rings helmer Peter Jackson likely to take charge, and sounds likely to only begin shooting when the lawyers have had their fill.
Jackson has in the past appeared keen to film The Hobbit, which is the story of how Bilbo Baggins stole the one ring of the later books from Gollum while on an adventure in the Misty Mountains with Gandalf and an array of dwarfs. Sir Ian McKellen would most likely reprise his role as Gandalf.
