Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3The first teaser for Spider-Man 3 is out, is it me or do these things get earlier and earlier? It’s not due for released until 4th May 2007, over 10 months away. Anyway, my fear for the Spider-Man franchise was that it would stretch too far, or have a change of cast. I think Tobey Maguire has been good and the Spider-Man films some of the best comic book adaptations. They’re far more complex, haunting and tortured than any of the others, Peter Parker really does have to be a hero to get up in the mornings, let alone carry on fighting crime.

The problem with any hero franchise is it’s villains I think, once you run out of good ones we no longer feel the same way for the hero, no films it really does seem that there is no light without darkness. Our favourite characters all have a multitude of villains to fight, but one of them always stands above the rest. For Batman, for example, it was always The Joker, for Superman it’s always been Lex Luther, for Spider-Man that villain is a choice of two ,either the Green Goblin (more popularly known I’d have said) or Venom.

All the cast returns for another outing, which is a good start, and the Green Goblin makes a re-appearance in the third episode, which can only be good news, but so too does Venom, Spider-Man’s darker alter-ego. You see, each movie has to get bigger. In the first film is was learning his powers while fighting the Green Goblin, then it was getting on with his life, trying to win over Mary-Jane, fighting Dr Octopus and watching out for Harry Osborn. In this film he’s learnt his powers, come to terms with his life, got Mary-Jane, so now it’s time to up the ante and rip it apart, so he must contend with the Goblin, a new character (Sandman) and, to top it off, Venom.

Hopefully the upcoming trailers will show more about the story, but so far they look to be doing alright.
