The Guardian has a list of the top 50 best book-to-film adaptations. I have to confess that there are surprisingly few where I’ve both read the book and seen the film, and I can barely remember the quality of the crossover on those.
In a project of truly mammoth proportions, Paul Kerensa has started The Movie Timeline of history you can contribute to. It charts events in the movies against a timeline of the world, ignoring real world events (unless featured in a film). Some classics he quotes are:
