Dedicated Anti-Piracy Unit

The UK is to get a police unit dedicated to combating film piracy. The unit will work closely with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) to find evidence and intelligence on film pirates who (we’re constantly being told) use the profits to help fund other criminal activities.

One of the quotes got me:

The creation of the unit is also proof of the increasing recognition of film piracy as a crime of significance amongst the law enforcement community.

I’m not sure if this is to do with an increase in significance, or whether the police think they need to see if cutting film piracy will help them cut other crime, or if this whole thing isn’t a result of some under-the-table funding by the movie industry (i.e. if we give you enough money to set up a dedicated unit, would you?).

We shall see how successful it is via future news stories (the unit is only due to run for 12 months initially).
