Bond Under Fire

James Bond - 007 - Casino Royale

Fans of the James Bond franchise are somewhat unhappy with the appointment of Daniel Craig as the new 007 it seems, so much so that they’re threatening (even actively encouraging) a boycott of the upcoming Casino Royale, the 21st film in the Bond franchise.

There has been upset from a group of fans since Craig was announced as the successor to Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond four times between 1995′s GoldenEye and Die Another Day, released in 2002, and who was very popular with fans.

A large number of celebrities and former Bons stars have some out in support of Craig though, including Brosnan himself. Others inlcude Christopher Lee (who is also a distant cousin of 007 creator Ian Fleming) and former Bond villain Toby Stephens, who played Gustav Graves in Die Another Day.

In other Bond news, the main baddie, Le Chiffre, is to be played by Mads Mikkelsen (King Arthur), while the new Bond girl, Vesper Lynd, will be played by Eva Green (Kingdom of Heaven).

Personally, I agree with Toby Stephens on this, the franchise is getting too far fetched and too cliched, it needs something new to reinvigorate it, more realism and more edge. I liked Brosnan, but I think Craig will bring something new to the role and hopefully make it his own.
