Some of the big guns have been making themselves known in preparation for summer 2006. Some old favourites and a lot of spin-offs flesh out the offerings. Aside from the Superman Returns, there’s the following:
Mission: Impossible III (aka M:I:III)
Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, fighting master criminals no one else can. The trailer is a little slow to start, with the villain, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman (who should make a suitably master criminal), telling Hunt that he’s going to kill the woman he loves. One things for sure: the stunts seem to have found a whole new level with some really spectacular effects. I like the M:I series and Cruise so I’m looking forward to it, expect a slick production with a thrilling story even with a relatively novice director at the helm. Ving Rhames returns as Luther Stickell and keep an eye out for the UK’s Simon Pegg (aka Shaun of the Dead), apparently taking over from Ricky Gervais who was due to star.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (aka Pirates of the Caribbean 2)
I loved the first movie, absolutely adored it, so, needless to say, I was pleased to hear that they were making two more films. That’s right, two more, they’re shooting them at the same time and releasing separately in the LOTRs style. The only concern I have is that they’d ruin a perfectly good thing. Signing all of the original cast up was a good move, along with the same writers and director. The trailer suggests the same mix of explosive action and hilarity that made the previous film so good and Johnny Depp back on excellent form at Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack owes his soul to Davey Jones and, unless he can figure a way out of it, is looking at spending eternity as his servant. While trying to get away, Jack spoils the wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley) and draws them into it. Bloom looks like he gets a slightly less wimpy Turner to play this time and Knightley’s character joins in the action rather than being simply a damsal in distress, making he look even sexier dare I say. Definitely one to watch.
The Da Vinci Code
I loved the book (I like all that religious intrigue and secret society malarky) and, while I had my reservations early on, the casting looks to be spot on (I didn’t think Hanks was the man for the role). The only remaining concern then, is how much damage they’ve done transferring it to the screen, but with such a good cast and Ron Howard, someone who rarely seems to slip directorially, I’m confident we’re looking at a reasonable attempt.
And that’s all before Ice Age 2, X-Men 3, The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, Miami Vice, Garfield 2, Sin City 2, Casino Royale and The Santa Clause 3. Looks like an interesting year, certainly for sequels.
