What Box Office Slump?

Defying expectations, the US box office had the second best Thanksgiving takings on record. Despite the supposed slump it’s in, and mainly due to the overwhelming success of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it was up on the same period last year, which again shows what we, the audience, all knew, but the studios refused to accept until recently: crap movies were the cause of the problem, not low attendance and other distractions.

Goblet of Fire staved off any competition to stay at the top of the US box office for a second week, taking an estimated £32m ($54.9m). It’s currently ahead of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or the Sorcerer’s Stone to everyone else) taking $201.1m compared with the earlier film’s $183m. Worldwide it’s supposed to have taken £239m ($408m).

In fact, the latest installment of the Potter franchise is doing so well it’s being touted as the ’saviour of the box office.’
