Go-Animation

Kottke pointed me in the direction of an interesting article on the technical process behind the creation of The Corpse Bride. What’s astonishing is they’re using hardware and software that is not only available to the average Joe, but affordable too.

They used Canon EOS-1D Mark II still cameras (this is stop-motion animation don’t forget, you don’t need something that’ll record more than one frame at a time) and Apple G5 computers running Final Cut Pro. A quick search with Froogle showed that you can pick up the cameras (body only) for about £2,200+. A dual chip G5 and Final Cut Studio starts at about £2,400. So for about £10,000 you could kit out your own animation studio, add another 10K and could make a feature-length animation in your spare time, something of the quality necessary to print to film and screen in cinemas if necessary. Imagine the sort of possibilities that opens, imagine band of small animation shops producing films, animations and cartoon series.

How innovative and cool could that be. Hell, you wouldn’t even need to launch in the cinema, you could seel DVDs via an associated website and recoup the costs that way.
