Everyday Effects

Pride and Prejudice Effects

Ian Failes from vfxblog.com dropped me an email regarding an article he has about the effects on the recently released Pride and Prejudice (through a Keira Knightley site I have). Now, you may be thinking ‘it’s a period drama, why the hell did they need effects on it?’ Not a bad question, but, you see, effects can be used for a lot more than merely creating extinct dinosaurs, recreating the Colosseum or for making a big bang look good. As the image above shows, it can also be used to improve the looks of any old shot.

This raises an interesting question, or a few, like, is this the sort of thing that the development house used to do (most films look totally different in the finished print compared to what was shot, that’s why people like negative timers get into the final credits) and just what do the cinematographer/director of photography think about it? Does it even herald an end for the technical staff involved in the lighting of a film, no longer do you need to worry about the shot, you can always fix it in post-production using a computer?

I don’t have the answers, only the questions.
