Halo Movie Gets Director

The movie version of the Halo computer game series landed another talent to add to the production crew in the form of Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson and his team will produce the movie and provide special effects through WETA Workshop, their special effects company based in New Zealand.

Jackson joins Alex Garland as the second big name to be attached to the project and is reported to be a big fan of the games. Garland, the writer of The Beach has been charged with writing the screenplay.

Halo, which is due out in 2007, previously hit headlines because Microsoft, the joint developers of the game, were demanding $10 million plus 15% of the ticket receipts as an upfront payment to secure filming rights. This was unusually high and many companies walked away from the project. In the end a combined 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures team won the rights for £2.8 million (approx $5 million) and 10% of the gross ticket receipts.

Halo follows in what is rapidly becoming a long tradition of video game movies, most of which have been poorly received at the box office. Doom, another First Person Shooter and a very popular games series gets it’s first big screen outing this year with The Rock in the lead role. If the trailer is anything to go by it won’t be setting the box office alight.
