Revolver

Revolver - A film by Guy Ritchie

The latest film from Guy Ritchie, director of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, is yet another gangster film (I seem to remember him saying he was trying to get away from the genre, hence turning down directorial duties on Layer Cake). It again features Jason Statham (currently on a high with The Transporter 2 due in cinemas shortly). The question, is whether it can reproduce the same success that his first two films enjoyed (best to forget about Swept Away).

My first thoughts on seeing the trailer is no. Statham is sporting a ridiculous beard and the fun, humour and cool seem to be lacking, or a least seriously toned down. He’s managed to rope in some serious Hollywood talent in the form of Ray Liotta, Andre Benjamin (AKA Andre 3000) and Vincent Pastore (who you may not know, but you’ll have seen him, he’s been in practically every film with Italian Americans in it) and looks to have created some interesting characters (Statham plays a gambler who is so good he is not allowed in most casinos anymore).

There have been accusations that the film is too complex and that its strange narrative structure means numerous scenes are repeated, often causing confusion and leaving the audience somewhat baffled by the end as well as not really engaging in the story. So, it may be that Ritchie has lost the golden touch, but as someone who enjoyed his first films, I’m willing to wait until I’ve seen it to pass judgement.

Revolver is out on 23rd September, check out the official website.

Update: Revolver certainly doesn’t appear to be charming the critics, but then, what do they know?
