Inward Looking

I’ve been trailer trawling a fair bit of late and I’ve noticed a trend in Hollywood movies; the reflective, character-based film is on the rise. Don’t get me wrong, the shallow action films are still about, but there seems to be a growing number of quiet, inward looking, self-exploratory films coming out too.

Take, for example: Shop Girl, Prime, The Thing About My Folks, Everything is Illuminated, The Chumscrubber, Broken Flowers, An Unfinished Life, Proof, Thumbsucker, Junebug and Elizabethtown.

Personally, I like these kind of films, and maybe it shows that Hollywood is at least aware that there is an audience for intelligent, thought-provoking movies and not just big-budget, action-packed, over-produced products.
