I posted a short while back about Serenity, an upcoming movie written and directed by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. The film is based on a TV series called Firefly which only lasted 14 episodes before it was cancelled, much to the annoyance of its growing fan base.
I hadn’t seen any episodes of Firefly (I don’t think it made it to terrestrial TV in the UK), so I downloaded the pilot on bitTorrent and took a look. I was impressed enough to buy the whole series on DVD. It’s basically a Western series. Even the clothes and equipment are primarily Western in style (i.e. cowboys with six-guns and rifles). There’s obviously some technology and the crew inhabit a spaceship, but many of the storylines are standard Western fair (train robberies, cattle selling, forays into various ‘settlements’). It’s a little slow in places and some of the episodes could stand a little tightening, but I really enjoyed it.
Anyway, Serenity is on general release (according to the BBC Film diary) in the UK on Friday 7th October, but it is featured in the Edinburgh film festival for those who want an early look.
