A Little Conversation

An excerpt from an email conversation I was having with a friend of mine:

I’m not convinced by King Kong yet, I have seen some of the earlier stuff, but nothing really grabbed me. They find some island with some caveman natives and a giant monkey. He captures the girl. They capture him and take him back to NY. Monkey escapes, terrorises city, grabs girl, gets killed. It’s mainly about the monkey (from what I remember) and even I can’t empathise with a monkey.

As for WotW, I’d agree with your thoughts on Spielberg. I think that most reviews (including the one I sent) have picked up on the fact that there seems to be little point. A guy trying to protect his kids, but he doesn’t lead some great defence of mankind, the aliens die of a cold. He just spends the movie running. Where’s the fun in that? If he had to get to his kids and help protect them, well then you’ve got some room from struggle, conflict, overcoming the odds, but he’s already with them. If he was a scientist investigating the scene and the aliens didn’t appear until mid-way through, and he leads the way to finding a way to fight them, then you’ve got something interesting.

I’m not sure it’s going to have enough punch to make a real blockbuster. Fantastic Four looks the banker this summer. The Island could go either way (I like the actors in it, the premise is good, but it’s Bruckheimer and Michael Bay – it’ll make lots of money but won’t leave you thinking about it on the way home). Harry Potter will make a ton of money no matter if it’s good or bad (I’m worried they’ll be trying to squeeze too much into too little). Batman seems to have been a damp squib, lots of noise, no real impact. Can’t remember what else is due out.

And they wonder why US cinema attendance is the lowest it’s been for 20 years.
