Trailer Round-Up

For whatever reason I seem to be behind on checking out the latest trailers on Apple. So I took some time to work my way through them and here are my thoughts on some of the interesting ones:

The Dukes of Hazzard
I have vague but fond memories of the original TV series. I’m not sure what the story or the point of this movie is, but the stunts look good, Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville should be a laugh as the Duke brothers and Jessica Simpson looks an inspired choice for a girl who spends most of the movie wearing very little.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I’d heard Disney were doing this, it’s being filmed in New Zealand and has WETA Workshop (the people who worked on Lord of the Rings) doing the special effects, which bodes well. They’re filming all seven books (I didn’t even know there were seven!) in the series. The trailer certainly looks impressive. This is another movie that has nostalgic links for many people of my generation, should do well.

Saving Face
Another one of those weird, low-budget, character driven films. A gay chinese girl has to take in her mum who has become pregnant, but she won’t say who by, and her mum doesn’t know she is gay. It looks funny and poignant.

A History of Voilence
Starring Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame, this is a thriller about the dark past of a man who runs a diner in a quiet American town. He’s a gentle, unassuming diner-owner now, but the question is, what was he before? Lots of potential.

War of the Worlds
With Tom Cruise starring and Steven Speilberg directing, this looked like a sure thing from the start, this trailer certainly doesn’t do anything to dispell that belief. Teaser Trailer 3 even gives you a glimpse of an alien on foot.

The Island
Now, I wasn’t convinced about this movie when I saw the first teaser for it, but I’m onboard now. This looks to be a bonafide blockbuster. Action, thrills, romance and something a little deeper look like they’ll make this movie one to watch. And at least Ewan McGregor hasn’t got that awful English accent this time either.

Fantastic Four
Comic book adaptations have had a hit-and-miss success rate when adapted to the big screen, Fantastic Four looks like it’s set to fit in the hit category. Aside from the great effects, especially for their great ‘gifts,’ there looks to be enough edge and a quality cast to add a bit more depth than your usual comic book fare.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I’m a fan of Wallace and Gromit anyway, but this big screen outing looks like it will put them on the global map. If this is as good as Nick Park’s previous animation, Chicken Run, it should be a stormer.

Bewitched
Another remake of another old TV show, although strictly it’s a film about a new TV series based on an old one. Still, I’m a Will Ferrell fan and he looks to be on top form, and they look to be trying to bring a little more emotional depth than the original show. It’s more a romantic comedy than a sitcom like the original show.

Stealth
Rob Cohen, director of The Fast and the Furious and XXX, brings Stealth to the screen this summer. The story is about three suspiciously talented and good-looking young fighter pilots (played by Josh Lucas, Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel) in the US Navy’s fighter development programme who must try and stop a rogue fighter controlled by artificial intelligence before it starts WWIII. The trailer rocks and Cohen has some serious action credentials. Leave your brain at the door and this should go down well.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I’m still unsure whether this can out do the original which is a classic, but Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are an awesome combination.
