Independent No Longer

The last of the ‘independent’ major movie studios, MGM (techically MGM/UA), has been bought by Sony. Sony bought what was MGM’s studio lot for Columbia/Tristar, which they also own, back in 1990.

The move is thought to be about getting hold of MGM’s library of films (which include things like The Wizard of Oz, Ben Hur and the James Bond films). This would tie up with Sony’s recent announcement that they want to start an ‘iTunes for movies’ service.
