With the current furore over The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy film I am beginning to wonder if it’s actually possible to adapt a beloved and bestselling book to the screen successfully. I suppose the other question is what makes an adaptation successful? Due to the relatively short runtime of …
It looks like the two new DVD formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, may become one, which would be a relief for everyone so as to avoid having differing formats to keep up to date with.
Both technologies use blue lasers to allow more storage on a standard-size DVD, 30GB in the case …
Being a fan of the Hitchkikers Guide to the Galaxy books, and with the film due out at the end of the month, I read the review with trepidation.
Critics always tend to be overly nasty in my opinion, but the review by the BBC had some phrases that worried me, …
Further to my previous entry, it looks like the movie industry will be increasingly releasing DVDs earlier after a film’s release in a bid to try and stop/reduce piracy.
I particularly like this quote:
“‘Your premiere may be at Wal-Mart,’ said Barry Meyer, chairman and chief executive of Warner Bros Entertainment.”
Apparently, Leicester Square will be going Star Wars mental on May 19th to celebrate the opening of Episode III.
They’ll be a squad of stormtroopers on patrol, a free performance of Star Wars music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the option to buy a ‘galactic passport.’
What this entitles you to …
I read this review of Sin City over at Defective Yeti, sounds good, Empire also featured it as one of the 10 must-see movies this summer. Sin City is released in the UK on the 3rd of June.
Another good review, this time from Kottke.org.
It sounds like another Wallace and Gromit movie, but it’s actually about the fact that, apparently, the nutters who are already queuing for the next Star Wars movie (which isn’t out until 19th May), are queuing at the wrong cinema.
They have got to be kidding, apparently ex-footballer Stan Collymore will be playing opposite Sharon Stone in the sequel to Basic Instinct.
Slate has a fascinating article on buying pirate DVDs in Shanghai. I love this quote:
At Sasha’s, the expats explained that buying real DVDs wasn’t an option, especially for the Chinese, because real DVDs cost 10 times more and weren’t even available. (The TV producer claimed she knew of a …
The last of the ‘independent’ major movie studios, MGM (techically MGM/UA), has been bought by Sony. Sony bought what was MGM’s studio lot for Columbia/Tristar, which they also own, back in 1990.
The move is thought to be about getting hold of MGM’s library of films (which include things like …
Sony have announced they want to create an ‘iTunes for movies’ next year with it’s top 500 movies being offered. Sony own a movie studio so they have the content, and no doubt this is seen as helping the sales of their new PlayStation Portable (PSP).
There’s been more talk of who will be next to play James Bond. Daniel Craig (who recently starred in Layer Cake) is a good choice I think, of the list put forward. My other preference would be Hugh Jackman.
I’m not sure any of the others have the mix …
Carrying on with the DVD theme, the New York Times has an interesting article on DVD producers and extra features. It’s a good insight to how the industry views DVDs.
The Washington Post has an interesting article on the shortening gap between a movie being out at the cinema and being released on DVD, especially if it does badly at the cinema (the good movies probably stay longer as they try to eek out every last cent they can).
I also …
